Hey was looking for some feedback from anyone who uses these. The market has gotten several of these to pop up over the last few months/year and the reviews I see on Newegg are always mix and match on these.  Just curious if any one has had any great luck or unfortunate luck, brands to avoid etc etc on the 1 tb drives.

My small 300g that I stuck ob my gaming box is pretty well full. I find myself in need of an upgrade and these things are currently priced under $100 so price wise they are very doable just want to make sure they are actually worth it.

Picked up a Seagate 1.5 TB and 1 Tb both from Newegg.  Got  the first for 99 and the second for 89.  Seems to run really fast and well so far.

I have two seagates and had both for about a year.  Never had a problem out of them at all.  Also have a WD MyBook and never had a problem with it either.

Never tried the 1TB, but I do tend to stick with the Western Digital brand.  I've had a number of WD drives (including 8 750G drives for my file server) that haven't ever failed me.  I have had 2 Seagate drives arrive DOA though!

I sure need more HD space all my games I purchased on Steam recently and all the videos that I captured are  really filling up my drive thinkin I should spend my Christmas $ on 2 1TB harddrives.

I'll have to double check, but I believe I have a Seagate 1.5 TB.  It hasn't died, but the performance/response time has gotten terrible.  I built a new machine with a 1TB Samsung which has performed much better (though I forgot I upgraded to 1.5TB on my old machine and thought I still had the 300 gig, so I can't fit all my data on the new machine... sigh).  I have both drives in the new computer now, and whenever I try to use the 1.5TB, there's usually a pause.

From what I've seen, quality varies more between different model numbers than different brands.  You just have to check the reviews.

FOR THE EMPEROR!!!

Currently, the only terabyte-class HD I have would be an external USB Seagate that I bought last year. It's pretty good, but it does have one issue: It runs hot. I cannot lay it flat on the desk or else it overheats, nor can I stand it on end, as this somehow restricts airflow and also overheats it. I have to lay it flat, and elevate it 1-inch off the desk using two magicmarkers to allow enough airflow. I only found this little method out by googling, and it turns out that this happens more often that not with externals in the terabyte range. Cavet emptor....

As for internals, I would hope that the same thing doesn't happen, but as a precaution, I'd make sure you have a fan blowing on your hard drive cage inside your case.

@jitspoe: Have you tried running SMART diagnostics on the hard drive in question to see what's going on?

SMART seems to think it's fine.  I've never had any luck with with SMART giving any useful information.

SMART: "Your drive looks perfectly healthy!"
*CLICK* DEAD

SMART: "OMG! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! REPLACE THAT DRIVE RIGHT AWAY!!!111eleventyone"
*2 years later, drive is still working*

I don't trust SMART.   It was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away...back when G4 was ZDTV. Smiley   On an episode of the Screen Savers they were going to show how unreliable SMART was.   They had taken the cover off a hard drive, and while the drive was running they poured Dr. Pepper into the drive.   Besides making a mess (Dr. Pepper was going everywhere) SMART still said the drive was fine.   It was a great episode. 1TB? Pfft, I need me some 2TB drives now! I blame my need to have all my tools, ALL of Amazon's free MP3 songs stored locally.

I have enjoyed the 1TB Samsung drives I bought a couple years ago though. They have worked better than any of the Western Digital, Maxtor, and Seagate drives I've used in the past.
