Lets see if there is anyway to help with this dilemma.

Story: Current hard drive is screwed. Has some sorta virus thats blocking internet connections, wont go into safemode, pretty much keeps them locked out of anything to clean the virus up.

problem1: Current harddrive is located in Florida and the repair man is located in SC. So going over to the harddrive and physically fixing it myself is not an option until thanksgiving.

problem2: Clone cd or any other cloning software is not an option since well harddrive is infected. Do not want any of the infection on the new harddrive.

the request: It has been asked of me to buy a new IDE harddrive and load it with WinXP and send it to them.

The dilemma: how? My understanding is That if I were to connect the harddrive to a motherboard to load it up that the motherboard drivers would get installed. Which would keep the harddrive from working properly as a main drive on the old computer once it was transfered over. I did a fast search online and everything was comming up with clone cd or other likewise software. As said before, not an option. So, without having the same MB configuration as the screwed drive is it possible to load Win xp unto an internal harddrive , send it to Florida , and have it plugged in by very un-computer savvy people?

XP does a pretty good job if the HD is IDE, I usually only have trouble with SATA drives due to XP not having any drivers included by default.

As far as "virus thats blocking internet connections" check the browser proxy settings. A lot of new viruses like to setup a local proxy so they can see all your web traffic.
