So, is anyone excited about Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0?

I've been working with it for a bit.  I like it.  The Domain Specific Language stuff is pretty cool!  Very nice for a large enterprise shop like I'm a Technical Lead for.

I've been playing with the beta, and the RC.  I am suprised at how much more I like it compared to 2008.  I also happen to like how C# is finally catching up to VB with the default parameter value.

C# is actually a more advanced language than VB.  I've been doing C# development since 2001 and I've done VB for over 12 years.  I like C# better.  The main thing they did in VS 2010 is add some code tools that a third party wrote.  Just like Microsoft.  They purchase the competition and assimilate it into their collective.

Oh yeah, I've not touched VB since VB6.  Once I went C# I never looked back.  That was the only feature I kind of missed, well that and DateDiff, that is a nifty little item but you can do the same functionality in C#.

Supposedly in 2010 they're actually paying attention to C++ and revamping intellisense, etc.  It's so annoying working with large projects in 2008.  Something with the way they manage memory causes you to lose debug information all the time, and you have to disable intellisense to reduce the chances of that happening.  It's also super unresponsive and will sometimes sit there for minutes at a time doing nothing when you try to scroll through a file, try to type, open a file, click a button, or pretty much anything.  I have my doubts, though, about how good 2010 will be.  I was hoping the issues we had in 2005 would be resolved in 2008 (stability and memory issues), and they just got worse when we "upgraded".

Haven't touched VS2010, but I hope to heck they managed to trim down some of the bloat....seems like you need double-digit gigabytes of RAM just get a C++ "hecko world" running in the 2008 version. I haven't run into the debug forgetfulness that jitspoe is describing, so I'm wondering if there's a config issue going on with that. And although the autocomplete feature can get in the way of smaller projects, in larger ones it can be a real time-saver, especially when dealing with idiots who code variable names like this:

Quote
bool flagDisplayingCombinatorialChambersTextData;

sigh...    Sad

For personal use, I like Code::Blocks for C++ work. It's light-weight, sips RAM, and has enough resemblance to VS that 90% of ppl can migrate easily to it. I've flirted with NetBeans some recently, and although I'd recommend it as a second behind C::B, it still has few weird issues that don't sit right with me. C# workers, of course, are pretty much stuck with whatever M$FT gives you to work with. And don't get me started with Visual Bastard Basic. Somebody just needs to put that monstrosity out of it's misery.   Undecided
